A Game Based on a Bugaboo Toy

Once I had discovered that I would soon be introduced to a tiny baby girl, I called everyone that I could think of. Eventually I contacted my aunt, who will be that baby’s grandmother. After many unsuccessful attempts to coordinate my class schedule with my aunt’s busy schedule, she and I finally managed to meet.

I had suggested a store that concentrated on linen for baby beds, but my aunt wanted to examine a larger number of baby items. With both of us eager to buy a baby-related product, we decided to visit a store with a wide range of items for the baby nursery. While there we spent some time looking at baby toys. At one point I started giggling, because I had found two toys given the name “bugaboo.”

“That’s a crazy name,” I said.

“No,” my aunt said. “That name is really a wonderful help to a new mother. It makes it easier for her to create a game that she can play with her baby.”

“How is that?” I asked.

“Well,” she said, “I can think of a terrific way to use both that bugaboo frog and that bugaboo chameleon in a game of peek-a-boo. I can see a mother covering either of those toys with a small cloth. Then I think that a baby would love to hear a mother say either ‘Where is bugaboo frog?’ or ‘Where is bugaboo chameleon?’ and to watch as the mother removed the covering and said, ‘Peek-a-boo, there it is.’”

I agreed with her that that would be a fun game. Unfortunately, I am afraid that my aunt has now pushed me to consider spending less time doing my studies. I am sure now that I will want to spend lots of time playing with my cousin’s baby daughter. I had better study hard these next couple weeks, so that I am ready to enjoy that little girl.

During that same stop at a baby store my aunt and I looked at more than toys for baby games. We also saw a number of different bugaboo strollers. Now I keep daydreaming about taking walks with my cousin’s daughter, pushing her in a bugaboo stroller. I do not even know if my cousin has a bugaboo stroller, but in my daydreams that is what I see.

I guess that that suggestion from my aunt caused the name “bugaboo” to stick in my head. I am eager to try playing a game of peek-a-boo using one of those cute bugaboo toys. I am also eager to try a number of other games, games that I learned about while talking further with my aunt.

Later that day my aunt shared with me some of the other baby games that she had played with my two cousins, her two sons. She said that when had been expecting her first son, then she had purchased a small paperback book full of baby games. She had played most of those games with her baby boys.

My aunt described one game where she would gently place a corner of a blanket over her baby’s face and then say, “Where is [the baby’s name]?” After that she would lift the blanket off of the baby’s face and say, “Peek-a-boo, there he is!”

I will have to start practicing to say that phrase. Of course, I will not use those very same words. I will need to exclaim, “Peek-a-boo, there she is.”
