Decorating Your Nursery:
Seven Steps to Choosing the Best Crib Bedding
-
Understand your style: Are you formal people who dine with
linen napkins and candlelight? Or are you a more casual, laid
back family? Your unique crib bedding needs to reflect
your new family. A white, four poster crib would look great
with formal white eyelet baby bedding whereas a cherry
wood Americana crib might look more at home with a bears ‘n
denim motif.
-
Consider the nursery color scheme: Are your walls already
painted a soft yellow? Then you can work with this color
palette to pick nursery bedding in a baby pastel – pink,
light blue or even a mint green. Bold colors in baby’s rooms are
also a growing trend. Today’s sophisticated babies have
nurseries in chocolate brown, candy pink and even black and
white toile. As long as you choose a crib bedding that
fits with the other colors in the room, your nursery will look
spectacular.
-
Build on your foundation: Consider what you already have before
visiting your baby bed boutique. We inherited some clown
paint-by-numbers from my mother-in-law which we paired with
circus crib bedding and some stuffed animals to create a
spectacular circus effect. You may have inspiration laying
around the house and you don’t even know it – your unicorn
collection, a vintage lunchbox, or even a favourite baby outfit.
-
Involve your husband: Baby bedding sets the tone for the
whole nursery. Try to pick something your husband will like too
– maybe he will be more likely to change the sheets!! If he is
a sports fanatic, incorporate sports paraphernalia – take some
game souvenirs, maybe some trophies if you have them, and select
baby bedding with the team motif or colors.
-
Fabric counts: Today’s crib bedding comes in a range of
materials. There’s chenille, satin, t-shirt knit and crisp
cotton to name a few. Check out the washing instructions (you
may need to hand wash or dry clean some of the higher end
brands). Consider the feel of the nursery bedding. Your
baby will be cozying up to these sheets every night so they have
got to feel great. Your climate will play a part too. A
Christmas in Vermont baby may need warm flannels whereas a
Florida beach bum baby may crave cooler, crisper linens.
-
Easy to Theme: If you are decorating your nursery in a theme
(like Winnie the Pooh, or ABC), you want your bedding to feature
your chosen motif. Some baby bedding companies also sell
matching valances, curtains, diaper shelves, glider pillows,
etc. For those of us who love to match, be sure to choose a
nursery bedding that can carry you through your entire room
decoration.
-
Incorporate a Personal Touch: Finally, when choosing your
baby’s bedding, make sure to pick something that you love.
Your decorating should reflect something special that you love –
seashells from a favourite beach vacation, framed pictures of
loved ones, and even special bedding.
